The lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove is the most photographed lighthouse in Canada. It is featured on almost every calendar from Atlantic Canada. It even had a Post Office until 2009, where tourists could have their postcards stamped with a lighthouse.
The lighthouse sits on an extensive granite outcrop at Peggy’s Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. It’s great to walk across the granite outcrop around the lighthouse and look out to the ocean.
If you were to sail due East from here you’d eventually arrive at Spain.
Interesting patterns in the granite look like maps.
I thought the band of quartz you can see in the photo opposite was snow!
The harbour here is still used by local fishermen, lobsters being the main catch.
Sculptor and painter, William E. deGarthe immigrated to Canada in 1926, from Finland. He spent summers at Peggy’s Cove, painting marine scenes. In the 1970’s he began a monument to Nova Scotia’s fishermen, using a granite wall as his canvas. It depicts 32 fishermen, their wives, and children enveloped by the wings of St. Elmo, the patron saint of sailors, as well as the legendary Peggy. Unfortunately it was only half finished when he died.
Beautiful pics… what an exciting place to explore.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Maybe you’ll manage a trip to Peggy’s cove one day.
This is really sweet, affectionate, and shows a great honor for the site. Do you live near here? It makes me sad that the artist did not finish his stone-work, but how well he did with what he finished!
I love the amount of photographs you posted – they are clear, and your writing is insightful
You certainly deserve to be freshly pressed!
Thank you for visiting my site. So glad you enjoyed the subject.
Gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to visit NS!!! It looks and sounds so beautiful! Thanks for the pictures and info! I’m hoping to make a trip sometime this year!!!
Loved seeing this place through your camera. I will probably never get there. The granite rock art is unbelievable and so timeless. Reminds me of all the art on the ancient temples and rocks of India. How the fishermen must have moaned his untimely death. Did he die in old age or young?
Thanks for visiting my post. The artist was 76 when he died, so not too young. It’s great to visit places on the internet that you’ll probably never see in real life.
Lovely pictures. I hope to visit Peggy’s Cove lighthouse some day. I read that it is situated on or near Bayer Lake. I feel like it is MY lighthouse. My name is Peggy Bayer-ha.
My first Login, 6,5 years when we have been at that Place; nice and special; than to Halifax and Boston by a German “Steamer”,
remindings frm a 77 a man….
Nova Scotia seems quaint and a nice place to visit. Definitely going to be added to my bucket list of places to visit. Thanks for sharing and congrats of being freshly pressed!
great pictures!
Looks like a very nice place to be. I love the houses, the colors and the size make them seem so welcoming. Really like the atmosphere you captured with your pics. Thanks for sharing.
The granite is absolutely spectacular! Thank you for sharing these photos — you’ve inspired me to want to take a trip for myself…
🙂
So happy to have found you. My family has traveled to Nova Scotia for years, and we have family ties through the wonderful Province. Though we tend to plant our feet along the shoreline of the Northumberland Strait, near Northport. If you’ve get to see that area – please explore. Pugwash is another great harbor town.
Where did you move from?
Lunenberg is stunning. My parents lived there for a few years in the 1980s and I have fond memories of the place, including learning to drive (!) in circles around the parking lot of the elementary school where my young half-brother went.
Hi, We moved hear directly from Scotland! Lunenburg is a very special place. Thanks for visiting my Blog.
I have never been to Nova Scotia. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. Looks like a lovely place. There’s just something about a town on the coast with all it various activities. Take care!
gdw
I’d love to visit that place. Looks calming and remote. Those are two good combinations.
Thanks for the photographic tour!
iwant to go your pics make it look so beautiful!
I have always wanted to visit Peggy’s Cove!
Being from Nova Scotia, it is awesome to see Peggy’s cove featured on freshly pressed! Great post, it is a beautiful spot!
Thanks – I didn’t even know what ‘Freshly Pressed’ was!
I just moved to Halifax from Toronto and am loving every minute of it. Although I find I miss my family and friends. I think you made a wise choice in Lunenberg it’s beautiful there. When I moved my friend drove down with me and we ended up at Peggy’s Cove at the end of January on a snowy day…it had been awhile since I had been there and she had never been – it was truly magical that day with all the snow falling and the black rocks. She went home to her family with some wonderful pictures and memories.
I’ve been reading some of your Blog. It can be tough moving to a new place, but I’m sure you’ll make friends in Halifax. There are so many people in Lunenburg who have moved here from Ontario. There are things I miss from Scotland, but there are so many things I love about Nova Scotia. All the Best in finding a job.
I look for pictures at wordpress most of the times. These ones are awesome.
Congratulations on being “Freshly Pressed”. 🙂
It was your comment that made me look to see what ‘Freshly Pressed’ meant. Thanks for that – I wondered why my mail box was full!
Great Pics! You just made me homesick! I miss the east!
Fun! So beautiful. I love the colorful buildings! It is one of my dreams to one day visit Prince Edward Island.
Beautiful. Just one problem: the weather…

I’m from Wisconsin, and as a child we visited Nova Scotia a couple of times. A few years ago I returned with my own children and husband, because of my memories of the area. I was inspired all over again! It is such a beautiful, friendly place! We have stamps from the lighthouse in Peggy’s Cove, and took a Lobster Boat tour with the kids in Lunenburg 🙂
Thank you for commenting. So glad you enjoyed your visit to Nova Scotia and Lunenburg in particular.
That is so cool. Great pics. Thanks for introducing me to a new part of the world and of Canada I have never been to.
Blessings,
Ava

Ah – my homeland! Those pictures soothe my soul. I grew up in Dartmouth, and my family frequently took trips to Lunenburg. When I was in university, I worked on the Bluenose ll, so spent that summer living in Lunenburg – an amazing experience. My children can’t believe I worked on the ship that’s on the dime!
The sculpture in the rock is simply amazing. Perhaps some day I can see it up close and personal. Congrats on being freshly pressed.
Beautiful pictures!
Enjoyed looking at your pictures. I especially liked the engraving in stone of the fisherman of the area. Thanks for sharing!
I still need to see the east coast of Canada and enjoy a freshly caught lobster! One day we’ll get there, thanks for the reminder!
Atlantic Canada is the place to come to enjoy lobster. We have eaten it so often since moving here. We couldn’t afford to buy it in Scotland. Here it’s the poor man’s food. Thanks for your comments.
How beautiful! The rock sculptures are so surprising and powerful… would not excpect to see something like that on the side of rocks. Ruggedly beautiful. I have an affinity with lighthouses, my great grandfather was a lighhouse keeper…
Beautiful pictures, I still have the visit that sometime in my life! I love the sculptures and the rock boulders making it look like Scotland.
Beautiful pics. I wonder what the weather is like in Nova Scotia? I had the impression it gets very cold. I’d like to visit in summer, but maybe not in winter! And no doubt I could not live there year round if the weather is a cold/windy as it seems to be in my mind.
But the beauty is amazing. How severe with all that rock, yet how solid and timeless, as well. The white quartz is very decorative!
Wow, those fisherman statues are really cool. Thanks for posting!
The art is beyond imaginable.
I’ve visited Peggy’s Cove… your photos make it look way more interesting!!! (probably because you knew what you were doing and we were just squealing about getting swept into the sea and wondering whether we could get decent food at the local cafeteria!)
here’s another interesting picture of a famous Nova Scotia landmark:
Such a beautiful place. You are very lucky to live there, it sounds and looks wonderful. I love the photos:)
Awwww… now I’m homesick. Raised in Newfoundland, more than a few yards to the east of where you are, but the geography is very much the same. And yes, I agree it’s amazing to see buildings perched on solid rock, so close to the sea.
Welcome to our home, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
Yes, Newfoundland is a place I want to visit – a bit like the West coast of Scotland, I think. Thanks for commenting.
Nice pics! I’m from Victoria… The other side of Canada. My buddy and I drove out to Halifax one summer, but didn’t get to Peggy’s Cove… Now I wanna check this place out! Looks pretty amazing
Beautiful pics! I have been to Nova Scotia once when I was little and I would love to go again!
Tough to photograph such an iconic place. You did very well to show life around the lighthouse and the history of the place.
Beautiful! Kinda reminds of Maine.
I would love to explore around there! It looks so pretty, and as you have shown, it provides many great photo opportunities.
These photos rock! Even thought Peggy’s Cove is 25 minutes from my house, It’s a treat every time I get to go there.
Ahhh…. this brings back memories. My husband and I used to hang out at Peggy’s Cove in 1967 and 1968. There was not a lot of “touristy” stuff there then, but it was magnificent. we wwould sit on the rocks and allow the waves to spray us in summer. We visited even in winter when the wave action was fast and furious. Spectacular. We had to move to Ontario in late 1968. We are hoping to travel back nest summer for a few months of East Coast exploring.
Wow! I’m completely obsessed with lighthouses… wonderful.
I’m from Nova Scotia. Your blog makes me homesick. No part of Canada is more beautiful than Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, period.
Recommend you visit the Cape Breton highlands, Northumberland Strait including Pugwash, Joggins, and Refuge Cove if you haven’t visited them yet.
Hi, we visited Cape Breton when we first landed in Nova Scotia. I love Baddeck! We also went to Joggins in 2009 – I wrote a Blog about it. Where do you live now? Thankd for your comments.
One of my favorite places in the world. It’s amazing to plop yourself down on those rocks and look out to the sea and imagine all that lies out there. After the SwissAir crash in 1998 that cove holds many more deep secrets!
My roots are both East Cost Canada (Nfld) and Scotland and I’m thrilled to have found your blog! Congrats on Freshly Pressed!
Hi, Do you live in Newfoundland, Scotland or some other part of Canada? I did not go into the SwissAir crash on my blog as I hate flying and it just brings back the horror of this sort of disaster. I will look at your blog, when I get through these comments!
I live in Ontario, but have literally hundreds of family members scattered all over the east coast. I don’t visit nearly enough!
Nice pics!!!
I’d loooove to visit Halifax someday… Atlantic Canada has been one of my dreams, not to mention PEI with Anne of Green Gables!
Thanks for your comment. I had a trip to PEI last summer and did a post about Anne of Green Gables. You might want to look at it.
What a gorgeous lighthouse! I don’t know much about the east coast lighthouses (my main area of interest is in west coast lighthouses), so it’s always a pleasure to learn more about them. That is wonderful how it used to have a post office in it. If I lived in Peggy’s Cove, I would go out of my way to send my letters through there. And those rock sculptures are stunning!
I wrote a couple posts about some of the lighthouses from my homeland (Northern California). Take a peek if you like!
Thank you. I loved your posts and look forward to reading more from you.
I grew up in and around Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and Halifax so this morning here in Seoul, as I spotted your image of the lighthouse it was just like meeting a dear old friend by chance in a totally unexpected place. For a moment, as I examined the great shots you have shared, I was half-convinced I saw some of them heave a sigh and a wish for me~
It is good to see that so many responding to it, and by extension your blog, either for the first time, or from deep-seated memories.
Thanks for sharing!
Hello to you in Seoul. So glad the photos brought back memories for you. You were very lucky to grow up around Mahone Bay, it is a beautiful area. Thank you for your comments.
Oh Canada, I love you! If I ever leave Australia, you’ll be the first place I move to!
Beautiful pictures 🙂
Love those pictures!
Loved the granite scupltures! Very much!!!
I had a chance to go many years ago. I remember seeing my first pitcher plants there.
It’s a photographer’s paradise with the lighthouse, boats, and homes.
Beautiful photos and what a beautiful spot you have choosen as your home. It’s a wonderful place Canada, I hope you are still enjoying it. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.
Very, VERY nice photos!! We’re finally at a point in life where we can take vacations. Although we’ve alot of the USA yet to see; we’ll certainly venture into Nova Scotia VERY SOON!!
Thanks again for the beautiful photos!!
Hope you make it to this neck of the woods.
It seems such a beautiful place… It reminds me of some old and weird-in-a-good-way movies!
OMG!
All Your photos are wonderful and they present the beauty of Nova Scotia. I like that lighthouse; of course, it is a beauty, a pearl.
Then there was surprise to me, sculptor from Finland. When I saw the house, I very soon thought that its architecture was somehow looking very Finnish. Those fishermen are awesome.
The cost with granite rocks are very similar that we have in Finland’s South and South Western coast. This kind of rocks can be seen also in France in Normandy. From the top, fourth photo is showing so similar rock that we have here. If I could not know that it is photographed in Canada, I never guessed right.
Photo called Peggy’s gift shop is also like a landscape from our archipelago. It is amazing how similar landscapes can be on the both side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Great post, which I love very much!!! Thank You presenting this.
Happy weekend.
Thank you. The fourth photo is the one that for me is so like the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. I have photos with rock formations that look identical. We do not go to Peggy’s Cove very often, as it is such a tourist trap, but I realised I hadn’t put any photos on here and people would be interested in the location. It seemed to work!
Such beautiful place!
It’s something about half-finished artwork, I just love it. Truly amazing among that incredible natura.
Wonderful reunion with Peggy’s Cove. I was here 13 years ago it must have been. The following week after we were here, it crashed a plane right outside the lighthouse. Would like like to return here.
